Dogs: Basic Needs

The most important year in your dog’s life is its first. Correct feeding, training, shelter and veterinary care all play an important part in assuring well-being and happiness for your new pet. After taking ownership ensure that your dog has had a vaccination check and that regular appointments have been arranged with your chosen veterinarian. A routine worming program is also crucial.

Be prepared to supply these basic yet essential needs for your new dog or puppy:

  • Shelter—this can be either inside or outside. If outside, your puppy will need a weatherproof kennel. If inside, a crate or a basket will be necessary.
  • A fully-fenced section—it needs to be adequately fenced to prevent escape.
  • A lightweight collar & lead—your dog needs to become familiar with these quickly. Check your collars regularly, especially if rearing a growing puppy.
  • Grooming—needs to be repeated at regular intervals for the dog to become accustomed to the routine. Different breeds require different types of brushes and combs. Remember to ask for advice when purchasing.
  • Toys—these help to keep a dog active and occupied. We have a great range in store.
  • Teething—a developing puppy requires something to chew on for good dental progress. Once again, our store can help with a variety of chunky dog chews.
  • Training—studies have shown that in the first 16 weeks of a dog’s life it retains experiences that will shape it forever. A puppy, then, needs guidance from either a professional trainer or another experienced owner. The dog should preferably be taught modern, gentle and non-compulsive training methods. These tap into a puppy’s natural drive to learn and makes this an ideal age to discover interaction. This can take the form of interacting with littermates and other puppies in addition to positive encounters with new people and places. The overall result is a well-adjusted dog that is easy to own.
  • Peace and quiet—if you have a puppy it’s going to need a lot of sleep. Make sure your new friend has somewhere where he or she can sleep soundly without being disturbed.
  • A proper diet—young dogs require a premium puppy food, such as that offered in the Nutrience brand range, in order to grow robustly. Mature dogs are also best fed a premium grade food with the benefits of improved health and a greater lifespan.
  • Exercise—regular walks and playful sessions are essential for the well being of any dog.
  • Regular worming, flea control and annual vaccinations—are all recommended to prevent health scares.
