Cats: Proper Nutrition

If Kitty appears to have a scruffy coat or a warm, dry nose, it’s possible he or she may not be getting enough healthy nutrients. Try keeping these suggestions in mind when it’s feeding time:

  • Don’t feed your cat dog food. It is not suitable since it does not contain adequate fat or protein. A dog food diet may cause illness and even blindness if fed to your cat over a period of time. Be sure to stick with a reputable, national brand of food. The main reason not to feed cats dog food is that cats need Taurine—a substance not found in any dog food.
  • Don’t feed your cat people food. It can cause your cat to become finicky and is not likely to meet its nutritional needs.
  • Save the snacks and treats for special occasions. They should never take the place of a nutritious, balanced diet.
  • Don’t feed your cat milk. Contrary to common belief, it will often cause diarrhoea since most cats are lactose intolerant. There are lactose-free substitutes available should you wish to provide this special treat.
  • Be sure to have plenty of fresh water available for your cat at all times. If Kitty prefers water from any other body of water nearby, it’s probably because the water in her dish tastes bad. Try substituting bottled or boiled water, or add a little club soda to make it more appealing. Cats love carbonation! (Remember to clean the bowl daily, too.)
